can be greatly affected by the forex market, e.g. the US dollar and gold have an inverse relationship &#8211; when USD goes down, the price of gold increases because it&#8217;s less susceptible to href=\"https:\/\/farmpolicynews.illinois.edu\/2021\/08\/world-food-prices-fall-in-july-as-the-supply-outlook-for-grain-tightens-in-some-regions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drought in wheat-growing areas in the USA over summer 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading to a decline in wheat futures (WHEATF) in July that year, commodity on an agreed date for a set price without actually owning the underlying commodity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In theory, these contracts should end with the commodity, e.g. 5,000 bushels of soybeans, being physically delivered.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in reality, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/LearnAndProtect\/AdvisoriesAndArticles\/FuturesMarketBasics\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">majority of futures contracts are dissolved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before they ever reach completion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Futures trades are generally based on leverage; if your position starts to fall, <\/span><strong>you could be subject to a margin call <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where you have to inject more funds into your brokerage account or have the position closed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of market actors who trade commodities:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Manufacturers<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as airlines buying large amounts of fuel or phone makers who need a lot of rare-earth metals, want to<\/span><strong> lock in the price of their supply<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by hedging their real market position with an opposite one in the derivatives market.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Speculators<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like individual traders or investment institutions who will trade futures in an <\/span><strong>attempt to profit from price changes<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and volatility.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That need of manufacturers 400;\">However, the first commodities market as we would recognize it today was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cftc.gov\/About\/HistoryoftheCFTC\/history_precftc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the USA in 1848<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the <\/span><strong>Chicago Mercantile Exchange<\/strong><span 400;\">Eggs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, commodities markets have developed and consolidated in the States, and <\/span><a mass transportation meant it was easier for resources to be traded over much greater areas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the main commodity exchange in the UK is the <\/span><strong>London Metal Exchange<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LME), which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lme.com\/en-GB\/About\/History\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traces its roots back to 1571<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was officially founded in 1877 when the industrial revolution called for stability in metal prices as ores were shipped from around the globe.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LME still <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lme.com\/en-GB\/Metals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specializes in<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To invest in oil through an EFT, there are large funds such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investor.vanguard.com\/etf\/profile\/VDE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanguard Energy ETF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VDE) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaneck.com\/us\/en\/investments\/oil-services-etf-oih\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF<\/span><\/a><span 400;\">Copper is a sought-after metal <\/span><strong>used in industrial processes and in construction<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the wires in your home are very likely made of copper!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of its many uses across construction, manufacturing, and electronics, copper is in high demand.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span is&nbsp; mainly traded on two exchanges that we&#8217;ve already looked at, the CME and LME.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CME is a USA-specific market and the price reflects American prices, whereas the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lme.com\/en-GB\/Education-and-events\/Online-resources\/LME-insight\/LME-and-CME-copper-arbitrage-when-global-and-regional-prices-meet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LME is a global copper market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the price reflects international price changes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s how you can get involved with trading copper. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How to invest in copper<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your options to invest in copper are broadly similar to that of oil; in the <\/span><strong>futures markets<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><strong>ETFs and mutual funds<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and buying <\/span><strong>stock in mining companies<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although you can buy rolls of copper wire or bundles of copper piping, the price is pretty low &#8211; as you can see below &#8211; if you were looking to physically trade copper, l<\/span><strong>arge quantities are needed because of the low value.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Commodity #4: Wheat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheat is an agricultural product and its <\/span><strong>price is very environmentally dependent<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Droughts or flooding can severely affect the price of wheat and any other soft commodity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since food is perishable, <\/span><strong>futures contracts can be more short-term<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are mainly popular before harvest.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as the supply and demand for wheat and other grains determining the price, government
